What Is Black Coffee?
Black coffee is any coffee drink that does not contain milk.
Black coffee = coffee + water
Latte, Cappuccino, Flat White, Mocha — all these are milk coffee drinks too. This is usually the confusing part, because they have different names, but most of them are still built from the same basic idea: coffee + milk.
Expresso
Espresso is a small, strong coffee shot extracted from ground coffee beans. It has a thicker texture and a layer of crema on top.
It is the base of every coffee. you can drink it directly, it may feel too strong for normal coffee drinkers.
Americano
Americano is one of the most common black coffees in cafés.
Basically, it is espresso mixed with hot water. Usually, the espresso goes in first, then the water.
Compared with straight espresso, Americano tastes more balanced and easier to drink.
If you are new to black coffee, Americano is a good simple start.
Long Black
Long Black is very similar to Americano.
The main difference is the order. Long Black usually starts with hot water first, then espresso is poured on top.
Because of this, more crema and aroma stay on the surface. So the first few sips may feel stronger, and the back part may taste lighter.
Cold Brew
Cold brew is different from Americano and Long Black because it is not made with espresso.
It is made by soaking coffee grounds in cold water for many hours. This usually makes the taste smoother, less sharp, and easier to drink cold.
Because it takes time to prepare, some cafés may only make a limited amount each day.
Pour Over
Pour over is made by slowly pouring hot water over ground coffee.
It usually tastes cleaner and lighter than espresso-based black coffee. You may taste more of the bean’s original flavour here.
It is common for home brewing and not every café will offer it.
Is Black Coffee for You?
Black coffee is a good choice if you want to taste more of the coffee bean itself. Because there is no milk covering the flavour, you can notice more about the coffee’s bitterness, sourness, aroma, and body.
But if black coffee feels too strong at first, that is normal. You do not need to force yourself. Coffee is still a drink, and the best coffee is the one you enjoy.
In the next chapter, we will talk about milk coffee — the smoother and creamier side of coffee drinks.
